Sinus ear infections occur when a chronic sinus infection is left untreated and spreads to the middle ear. This infection is called otitis media also known as middle ear infection. These infections can be highly uncomfortable, often presenting with a combination of sinus and ear-related symptoms. Understanding the signs and symptoms of a sinus ear infection can aid in timely identification and treatment.

How Does a Sinus Ear Infection Happen?

The middle ear is connected to the back of the nose through a small passage called the eustachian tube. This tube plays a crucial role in equalising air pressure between the middle ear and the outside environment.

In chronic sinusitis, the secretions filled with bacteria from the sinuses drain through the nasopharynx (the back of the nose) into the throat. During this process, mucus may enter the eustachian tube, leading to a middle ear infection.

Sinus Ear Infection Symptoms

The symptoms experienced during sinus ear infection are:

Chronic Sinusitis Symptoms:

  • Runny nose

  • Nasal congestion or blockage

  • Headaches

  • Facial pain

  • A sensation of phlegm dripping from the back of the nose into the throat

  • A frequent need to clear the throat

  • Sore throat and throat pain

  • Frequent cough attacks

Usually in chronic sinusitis patients will experience only one to two symptoms with less intensity. Most of the time, the patient might have only one complaint: a sensation of phlegm dripping from the back of the nose into the throat.

Middle Ear Infection or Otitis Media Symptoms:

  • Severe ear pain

  • A feeling of blocked or clogged ears

  • Fever

  • Ear discharge

Symptoms like fever and ear discharge are rare. Even symptoms like giddiness and ringing in the ears (tinnitus) can rarely be experienced, indicating the infection's spread to the inner ear.

Additional Considerations

The infection can sometimes spread from one part of the ear to another. So along with these symptoms, you can also experience other ear infection symptoms.

If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned, it’s crucial to consult an ENT specialist. Early diagnosis and effective management can prevent complications and alleviate discomfort.
